A YouTube user put together this vid showing an alleged subliminal hidden in an episode of Smallville. I say "alleged" not because I doubt it is a subliminal, but because it seems to be a case of "clever" product placement. The question then is: Are product placements really subliminal advertising given a new name?
Not clever market placement - definitely subliminal advertising.
ReplyDeleteIsn't subliminal advertising (on TV anyway) illegal? And yet there's TONS of examples of it on YouTube. There was like this McDonalds ad with one single frame of a cigarette logo in the corner. For one frame. I was like: holy crap dude!
ReplyDeleteThat Sprint ad is totally inappropriate, but probably legal. I believe you have to show a certain number of frames of something before it is officially clasified as subliminal, and therefore illegal.
ReplyDeleteBabylon 5 did a spoof subliminal message in a Psy Corps commercial, (the message 'the corps is your friend, trust the corps' flashes up for a few frames, and they made a big thing about what they had been 'allowed' to do in the dvd extras, if I remember correctly)
There's no such thing as subliminal marketing in Smallville.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think anyone actually watches smallville.
